Addendum to ‘Dumbing Through Training’
James over at “Under a Gibbous Moon” sent this too me. “Study: Rumors of Written-Word Greatly Exaggerated“ finds that the amount of reading we do each day has increased since the 1960′s.
I’m very glad to see that the amount of words we’re exposed to in our daily lives has actually increased. After a quick search I haven’t found much that has assessed the quality of the written word we’re exposed to these days. From my personal observations I feel that the quality of what is being written is decreasing. Personally, I don’t have a problem with “leet speak” as much as words that fail to intelligently and comprehensively express their information. Without parroting my “The Dumbing of Humanity Through Improved Training Methods.” I do feel that we need to strive to maintain the highest quality of the words we do express. It is too easy to short cut our thoughts and fail to express our points clearly.

15 years ago I spent downtime reading books like ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘Of Human Bondage’. Admittedly I had more time, but now I read blogs and links and short articles on humanism, and….. a lot of not much. Is it just me, or are we trading quality for quantity?
